Although the tour is billed as “Around the World in 80 Minutes,” its creator, Susan Birnbaum, doesn’t like to be a stickler for the clock when visiting Greek, Italian, Colombian, Egyptian, and Lebanese restaurants and shops along 30th Avenue. “I just couldn’t resist the pun!” she says. BOWERLY LANE CHOCOLATE TOUR
The sugar high that comes from visiting five haute chocolate spots along the Bowery is significant, but this two-hour walking tour is meant to work it off along the way. Liz Young’s four-hour marathon tour treks through Brooklyn to explore a lesser-known culinary enclave straddling Sunset Park and Bay Ridge. The Chinese food is mostly Cantonese, notable for what Young calls “refined, delicate flavors.” The tour starts with Hong Kong–style dim sum, with curious eaters noshing on dumplings, Chinese tarts and stuffed buns, rice porridge, bubble tea, scallion pancakes and, for the truly adventurous, chicken feet or fin soup. On this seven-stop, three-hour tour through Hell’s Kitchen, expect a midtown melting pot of eats, including empanadas, milk shakes, secret-spot chorizo tacos, pork buns, biscotti and apple pie. Bonus: On cold days, local tour guide Moira Campbell swings by the little-known 414 Hotel, a bed-and-breakfast where you can rest your legs by a cozy fireplace. TASTE OF HARLEM TOUR
“I feel sometimes like I’m Mr. U.N.,” says tour leader Neal Shoemaker, who guides school kids and tourists through Harlem. “I mean, Kentucky kids eating authentic African food? It’s so cool! They’re not going to get that in Louisville.” The mix of African, African-American, Spanish and Jamaican edibles won’t merely fill the stomach, he promises; they’ll help illustrate Harlem’s diverse culture as well.
